Denmark’s Electronic Research Library (DEFF) is an organisational and technological collaboration between Danish academic, research and educational institutions.

As a national consortium, DEFF negotiates and enters into contracts for electronic licences on behalf of these institutions. We currently collaborate with more than 75 national and international publishers and provide services to more than 175 institutions.

DEFF’s main customers

  • Universities and the Danish Royal Library
  • Other higher education institutions (e.g. university colleges and business academies)
  • Upper secondary schools

When does DEFF negotiate?

DEFF negotiates to ensure that Danish educational institutions have equal access to the most relevant content, on the best possible terms and at the lowest possible prices.

DEFF is also responsible for ensuring that the terms and conditions specified in the Danish National Strategy for Open Access are honoured in licence agreements relating to academic eJournals.

The following minimum requirements have been set for the products DEFF handles (assessed over three years):

  • Products that target university libraries or other higher education institutions require the support of at least four institutions and a volume of at least DKK 250,000
  • Products that target youth education institutions require the support of at least 10 institutions and a volume of DKK 25,000

What products qualify for the DEFF licence portfolio?

DEFF’s licence portfolio primarily consists of content such as e-journals, databases and e-books. However, it also includes newspapers, information tools and audio-visual content of interest to our customers.

How to get your products considered?

Once a year, DEFF considers new products to be included in our licence portfolio. Publishers are invited to complete this digital form in order to submit a product for consideration.

In April, the member institutions vote on products to indicate their interest. DEFF arranges trial access and initiates negotiations for products we estimate can meet the formal requirements within a pilot period of three years.
