DEFF refuses to enter into agreement with Annual Reviews

The publishing house Annual Reviews demands a markedly higher price for its academic journals due to poor economy within the company. DEFF’s institutions can not - and shall not - pick up the bill.

On behalf of the universities DEFF has tried to negotiate a possible renewal of the agreement with Annual Reviews, who publishes academic journals with so-called review articles that compare research results within a given field of research.

From the very beginning of the negotiations the publisher has insisted on a new, unacceptable pricing model that involves huge price increases. This is unaffordable for the Danish research institutions, who are subject to yearly 2% cutbacks. Annual Reviews would furthermore force the Danish institutions to extend its subscription and buy access to a bigger and more expensive collection of journals.

DEFF’s negotiator Lars Scherchen Bækgaard Andersen explains:

“DEFF’s institutions refuse to be taken for granted by Annual Reviews. Here we are met with the conception that the institutions are to serve as an economic safety net for the publisher. If the production costs are too high, the publishing house must look inwards: What can be trimmed and where can cutbacks be made?

We do not refuse to reach an agreement with the publishing house, but we must also signal clearly that the days are long over where publishers could expect the research libraries to simply pick up any bill that the publishers made out”.

DEFF and the institutions have therefore turned down the proposed agreement and there is a risk that a line of researchers and students will be without access to Annual Review’s journals for some time.
